Back in August 2021, I printed some STL files of a Witch's room, including the witch. You can see the original prints here August is Amazing.
Now, 4 years later, I finally get around to painting them, although I couldn't find the poison bottle. So I substituted the cupboard from Loot Studios' Granny's Prophecy release.
First to be painted was the rock platform.
The base has a large 'carpet' down the middle. A good opportunity to break up the block of grey that would be the rocks. I went with a purple theme, my wife's favourite colour. Add a nice yellow trim, and the contrast is quite pleasing. The rocks themselves had several layers of dry-brushing followed by a couple of applications of one of the many "grime" enamels I have to take away the clean look it had. This had the effect of breaking up the grey block and giving it more depth.
Having finished the rock base, I then moved on to the Throne. With its nice Chesterfield look, I had the feeling this would be a nice, easy painting task. A deep green was chosen for the chair to bring out the studded back. The two little arm cloths I painted the same colour as the carpet, sticking with the purple/yellow theme.
Having finished the Throne, I moved to an item with the chance to try some different highlighting techniques. The Cauldron presented this opportunity with the Octopus-type tentacles coming out of the concoction. The metal of the cauldron was black with a dry-brush of gunmetal over it. The tentacles would be red with a yellow underside and white suckers. The concoction would be green with some purple bits floating in it.
Making progress and on time to get everything finished in time for Halloween, I took stock of what needed to be done. Most things seemed straightforward, apart from the witch herself.
First off, the Pumpkin. It should be quick and simple, after all, it's mostly orange and green. Within a couple of hours, it was 90% done.
The benefit of these early photos is that I could see the small errors, such as the fact that the eyes and mouth need to be given some colour and the plant pot also needs painting.
Now onto the Fireplace. This also made use of the purple/yellow theme evident in the set of models.
The jar at the side of the fireplace needs to have a different colour otherwise the base is mostly grey.
I don't have any photos of the Cuboard being painted. In truth, it was very quick, with the most difficult part being deciding on the colours for the bottles and books on the shelves.
That left one model, the most difficult since it was the main piece. The witch herself. I decided to once again use the purple/yellow theme. She has a large flowing cloak, large thigh-length boots, a broom in one hand and a flame in the other.
I gave her a pale blue skin colour, with light-bond hair. I also wanted to do something different with her eyes. I'd seen photos of women with supposed Viking face painting. I'm not good enough to do that on something this small, so I settled for a sort of 'racoon' look. A simple black band across the eyes. To make it more startling, the eyes were left white. The flame I decided to make blue. It is magical after all.
All models were painted with Army Painter Speedpaints with a combination of Army Painter and Scale 75 Acrylics used for various extra highlights where needed.
